Expression of Interest: International Medical Graduates (IMG) assessor

The Royal New Zealand College of General Practitioners (the College) is seeking to contract more Fellows to its pool of International Medical Graduates (IMG) assessors because we’re anticipating an increase in vocational registration applications in the coming year.

These are paid, contract positions that require a minimum of five years Fellowship.

Being an IMG assessor is a fantastic opportunity to provide quality advice for overseas-trained GPs seeking vocational registration in New Zealand in the scope of general practice. Becoming an assessor will enrich your experience of working with our regulator and increase the numbers in our general practice workforce to help shape better health outcomes for New Zealand.  Full training will be given.

As an IMG assessor you will:

  • Consider an application for registration within a vocational scope of practice for preliminary advice to the Medical Council of New Zealand (MCNZ)
  • Assess the qualifications, training, and experience of the applicant against a New Zealand general practitioner registered in the vocational scope of practice
  • Draft the preliminary advice for the Censor-in-Chief
  • Moderate draft preliminary advice from other assessors

Interview overseas trained GP’s alongside another assessor on behalf of the Medical Council to determine the final advice for the application for vocational registration in general practice.

Experience required

Fellows should have experience in evaluating and reviewing applications independently against set criteria and be able to make professional judgements.

They should have a high standard of interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills. Previous experience in interview techniques would be preferable.

Fellows must have the availability to evaluate IMG applications throughout the year and the flexibility to attend and undertake interviews for IMG candidates.

Frequency of work

The amount of work and frequency of the applications is by the number of applications received from the Medical Council for the College to evaluate and provide advice. Therefore, the College is unable to predict the number of applications they will receive annually.   Each application will require two assessors - one to evaluate the application and draft the advice and the other to moderate the assessor’s initial evaluation and advice.  At times, and when required by the Medical Council, assessors will also interview applicants. The College will allocate out the work across the pool of assessors.

How IMGs work with the MCNZ

The College is recognised as a Vocational Education and Advisory Body (VEAB) by MCNZ under a memorandum of understanding.

The purpose of the VEAB is to evaluate applications from international medical graduates (IMGs) who are seeking registration in general practice within a vocational scope of practice in New Zealand.

Providing preliminary vocational registration advice to the MCNZ is an important role for the College and we are currently looking at increasing our small pool of dedicated IMG assessors in anticipation of increased vocational registration applications in the coming year.

The organisation

The College is the professional body and postgraduate educational institute for general practitioners (GPs) and rural hospital doctors. Our 65+ operational staff support 5,500 College members with an aim to improve health outcomes and reduce health inequities.
