GPEP year 1

Programme structure

In-practice experience

Partnered with medical educators and approved GP teachers, you will be immersed into the world of primary care by completing one or two practice placements in accredited teaching practices.

College-employed registrars complete two six-month practice placements over the 12-month period. We will endeavour to place you in a rural or high needs practice for one of the six-month placements.

Practice and self-employed registrars typically complete one practice placement over the 12-month period.

The process is designed to assist you in the transition from secondary care hospital runs to caring for patients in a holistic way.

Seminars and workshop

In addition to clinical time, you will also participate in a range of learning activities, including interactive seminars and workshops, working with small groups and medical educators. Expect role-plays, presentations, small group discussions and video reviews, completed alongside other GPs in training.

Summative activities

By the end of the first year in GPEP, you will take the wealth of knowledge and experience you have acquired and apply it when sitting the GPEP year 1 written and clinical examinations.

Hours of work

Full time registrars will be required to work eight-tenths clinical time a week (approximately a 32-hour week) with one-day release for seminars and workshops. However, registrars have the option to work part-time, five-tenths clinical time a week (approximately (approximately a 20-hour week) and attend workshops.

Programme costs for GPEP year 1

When applying for GPEP, you have the choice of three employment options, which will determine how your training is paid for:

College-employed

You would be employed directly by the College during your twelve months in GPEP year 1.

The expenses associated with employment and training (including your written and clinical examination fees) during your GPEP year 1 will be paid by the College.

Practice-employed

This is an option if you are currently employed by a practice and/or wish to remain in a single practice throughout your first year of GPEP training.

You would be employed directly by a practice and work at that practice for the twelve month period of GPEP 1 training (i.e. you will not be required to change practices at 6 months as College employed registrars are required to do). The training fees associated with GPEP year 1 will be paid by the College. Your salary will be paid by your practice and you will need to pay for your clinical and written examination fees as well as the College membership fees.

Self-funded

You can apply as a self-funded registrar. This means you will need to pay the programme fees yourself, which will amount to approx. $40,000 plus GST.

You would be employed directly by a practice and work at that practice for the twelve month period of the GPEP year 1 training (i.e. you will not be required to change practices at 6 months as College employed registrars are required to do).

The College will invoice you for the training and administration fees ($40,000 plus GST) associated with GPEP year 1. Your salary will be paid by your practice and you will need to pay for your clinical and written examination fees as well as the College membership fees.
