Expression of Interest: Prior Specialist Pathway evaluators and Assessment Committee members

The Division of Rural Hospital Medicine (the Division) is seeking to contract rural Fellows to its pool of evaluators and Assessment Committee members for the newly developed Prior Specialist Pathway (PSP) to Fellowship. The PSP provides individualised pathways to Fellowship for specialists from New Zealand and specified overseas countries. Applications for the PSP are reviewed by an evaluator and assessed at sub-committee level (the Assessment Committee). Eligible Fellows would form part of a pool for selection for the roles described, to demonstrate transparency and avoid conflicts of interest between applicants and evaluators/assessors.

Being involved in the PSP is a fantastic opportunity to provide quality advice for overseas-trained doctors seeking vocational registration in New Zealand in the scope of rural hospital medicine. Becoming an evaluator or a member of the Assessment Committee will enrich your experience and increase the numbers in our rural generalist workforce to help shape better health outcomes for New Zealand.  Full training will be given.

Evaluators (annual contract)

As an evaluator, you will:

  • Review the qualifications, training, and experience of the applicant against a set criterion.
  • Draft the preliminary documentation.
  • Present findings to the Assessment Committee.

This is a paid, contract position that requires approximately 30 – 60 hours of work per year, depending on the volume of applications received.

Committee members (two-year contract)

The Assessment Committee consists of three Division Fellows: one Board of Studies member, one Clinical Lead and one Fellow representative.

As a Fellow representative on the Assessment Committee, you will:

  • Assess and consider the evaluators report and corresponding documentation for each applicant.
  • Confirm and conduct interviews for applicants.
  • Establish an individual-specific pathway to Fellowship of the Division.

This is a paid, contract position that requires approximately 20 – 40 hours of work per annum, depending on the volume of applications received.

Experience and requirements

To be eligible, doctors must

  • be Fellows of the Division
  • hold a current Annual Practicing Certificate with the Medical Council of New Zealand
  • Fellows should have experience in evaluating and reviewing applications independently against set criteria and be able to make professional judgements
  • Fellows must have the availability to review PSP applications throughout the year and the flexibility to attend and undertake interviews for PSP candidates
  • have a high standard of interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills. Previous experience in interview techniques would be preferable.
