Personal statement
Tēnā koutou,
My name is Chris Reid and I am seeking your vote to be elected as President.
A little bit about me:
I live with my wife and son in the Bay of Islands and work as a full time GP in a large practice in Kerikeri. Over the years I have undertaken a wide variety of governance and leadership roles including board positions with Te Tai Tokerau PHO and Northland DHB. At present I chair the Northland Faculty and serve as the current chair of the College’s National Advisory Council. I also chaired the steering committee for this year’s College conference and in my younger days I served as a medical officer in the Royal Marines and Royal Navy. In addition, I have been both a practice owner and an employee which gives me invaluable insight into the business models we all operate under.
All of this, I feel, has put me in good stead for taking on the important role of President.
Commitment, dedication, transparency and teamwork are the cornerstones of my approach to the role.
The now:
The College is a large organisation and requires astute governance and leadership from its President and Board. Credit to Tim Malloy’s tireless and passionate leadership, the College has evolved significantly over recent years.
Building on its strategic pillars: equity, quality, workforce, advocacy and membership, the College now has expert advisory groups that can provide the President and Board with a wealth of institutional knowledge, skill and guidance. This is something I feel we should build on.
The future:
We should see the College as an integral and critical part of our profession, something we are all proud of. Whether we are students, new graduates, registrars or fellows, we should know the College is there to support us in our vocational pathway, to be the specialists in the primary care sector.
Fundamentally we are a team and collectively we have to be bold, we need to be at the forefront of the health sector, and advocate effectively and clearly for what we feel is best. At the same time we need to preserve the values of general practice, the continuity and the unique bond of the general practitioner and their patients.
Our College needs to listen and reflect on your views so that the GPEP and cornerstone redesigns currently underway are fit for the future as you see it. In addition we need to continue to advocate for equity in health outcomes for our patients and be prepared to comment on the social determinants of health: labour, welfare, education, housing and the environment.
I believe I have the drive, experience and skills to be your President. If you give me that privilege you will get my 100% commitment to work with you, to represent you, and to hold the baton for general practice, ensuring we continue to evolve, innovate and remain the most effective workforce for our patients.
