The Rural Hospital Medicine Training Programme is an intensive four-year programme that qualifies you to work as a rural hospital generalist.

About the training programme

The Rural Hospital Medicine Training Programme teaches core components of generalist knowledge, specific skills and approaches to tackle the plethora of possible hospital presentations in a rural context.

Rural hospital registrars

  • Registrars with families can study part time
  • Fellows in training are assigned an Educational Facilitator (EF) as a mentor and guide
  • The Division has recognition of prior learning to avoid repeat training
  • Must be a NZ citizen or permanent resident

Dual Fellowship

Undertaking the Rural Hospital Training Programme in parallel to the General Practice Education Programme is a popular choice among new registrars. Training in both scenarios opens doors to flexibility in your future career.

A GPEP registrar can use up to 18 months of specified runs against the ‘non general practice’ time required in General Practice Education Programme (GPEP) and RHM registrars.

The Rural Hospital Medicine Training Programme has many moving parts; but help is at hand. There are two clinical leaders also available to provide support.
