The College is delighted to announce that Dr Bryan Betty has accepted the position of College Medical Director, effective 9 September.
Bryan is a Wellington-based GP, who may be familiar to many members from his time as Deputy Medical Director for PHARMAC – a job he held between 2015 and May 2019. He was also a candidate in the College’s 2018 presidential election.
Bryan is a practising GP, who works at Porirua Union and Community Health Services in Cannons Creek, East Porirua - a suburb known for its high needs and social deprivation. Bryan has said equity, and issues such as access to quality healthcare for all people, have been big motivators throughout his career. He has also been a strong advocate for general practice and the role of general practitioners within the primary health care system.
Bryan chairs the Capital Coast Alliancing Leadership Team, is on the Board of Tu Ora Compass Health PHO, and chairs its VLCA Youth Council. He also sits on the National Diabetes Leadership Group.
As Medical Director of the College, Bryan will provide clinical advice and guidance on policy, medicolegal, and media issues. He will also represent the College and its members on various health sector committees.
