The Quality Standard

Quality news for general practice

Issue 11 – October 2017

Meet the Quality team

The Quality team at the College is delivering our strategic goal to support general practice to provide a high standard of care to their patients.

Kate Wang is the General Manager, Quality, and has a team of seven colleagues who help the College in this important area. Kate joined the College around a year ago and brought with her significant experience in clinical governance and operations at a senior level from the health sector, including from Wellington Free Ambulance and Mary Potter Hospice.

Rosemary Gordon is Principal Advisor, Quality. Rosemary joined us from ProCare, an Auckland PHO, in February 2017, and has a background in nursing and quality improvement. In the team she develops and maintains the quality standard, and is frequently out visiting the College’s stakeholders including practices, PHOs and the HQSC. Finally, she trains the practice assessors.

I get to see health care being delivered across New Zealand, in all its variety – and be part of its support network, a real privilege.

— Rosemary Gordon

Lucia Bercinskas is Senior Advisor, Quality. Lucia has a diverse background working in health, including at the Ministry of Health and in a range of public and non-government sector bodies, including hospitals and education.

No day is the same – it’s about learning, being challenged and building relationships.

— Lucia Bercinskas

If you’ve called us on the phone about CORNERSTONE® or QA2QI, or visited a stand we’ve exhibited at you’ll probably have spoken with Ros, Rupal, Lucy or Swas. Ros Bignell is Manager, Practice Assessment, and manages the operational aspects of the College’s work for the Foundation and CORNERSTONE® programmes. Ros has a background in working in professional bodies. She and her team work to improve the experience of the practices and assessors engaged in Aiming for Excellence.

Lucy Wass, Rupal Lad and Swas Lal help coordinate practice assessment. This means supporting practices with the QA2QI system, answering queries on the programme and arranging the schedule of assessments. They’re each in the enviable position of hearing first-hand the pride and delight from practices who achieve accreditation after what can be an involved process. Rupal sums up the team’s mission:

We want to help practices offer the best level of care they can.

— Rupal Lad

Louise Abolins is Group Secretary and will be a familiar name for many – she helps us run smoothly and keeps College members and practices up to date about news and developments.
