The Really Great Russell Conference
The Northland Faculty hosted yet another successful conference at The Duke of Marlborough in Russell, bringing their general practitioners together.
Focused on collegiality between GPs and extending their invitation to GP registrars, medical students and, RMOs, the faculty endeavors to foster strength within the profession while not losing sight of having its voice and regional needs heard.
From sharing the power of the good virus in nature to genetic possibilities in medicine, dissecting the new STI guidelines to gallstones and parathyroid glands, subjects in haematology to rheumatology. Northland attracted great speakers and addressed concerns of our responsibility for firearm holders with NZ Police representatives.
Speakers were impressed with the leadership shown by the medical students Will Bramley and Kate Dunstall who stepped up to run the conference and entertain the attendees at the, even more collegial, conference dinner. Not only does the Northland Faculty intend to continue to support student leadership, they would encourage other medical conferences to ‘pay it forward’ in lieu of speaker gifts to others less fortunate than ourselves as they did for their speakers who found this very moving.
In the wake of the Northland Faculty AGM they will continue to champion the provinces in all college matters and they will work with their secondary colleagues to create a cohesive presence within secondary services aiming to develop a department of General Practice that can reach out and support GP leadership but also connect and teach RMO’s and medical students.
The Faculty is excited to expand its Kapa Kaiaka programme that supports registrars and new fellows with events, CME and wellbeing incentives. Existing Northland GPs are encouraged to utilise new CME funding and can apply for support to develop special interests.
