Medicinal cannabis prescribing

The regulatory regime for medicinal cannabis in New Zealand changed in 2020 to make it easier for specialist GPs and other registered medical practitioners to prescribe cannabis medicines and products. This statement provides a position for our members to review and refer to before making clinical judgements about medicinal cannabis prescribing.

Claims that medical abortion can be ‘reversed’ by a dose of progesterone after a woman has taken the first medical abortion medication are not based on reputable scientific evidence. The College upholds views by other medical Colleges’ that the promotion of the term ‘abortion reversal is ‘unproven and unethical’ based on the strength of evidence.
