Emergency evacuation scheme

A documented emergency evacuation scheme must be the official scheme issued by Fire Emergency New Zealand. The application and approval process may take several months.

To demonstrate compliance of a FENZ approved evacuation scheme, practices need to upload the approval letter sent to the applicants RealMe account. If this can’t be accessed, contact FENZ at: RiskReduction@fireandemergency.nz

All general practices must ensure their building complies with the Fire and Emergency New Zealand Act 2017 (the Act) and the Fire and Emergency New Zealand (Fire Safety, Evacuation Procedures, and Evacuation Schemes) Regulations 2018 (the Regulations). A building that requires an evacuation scheme is called a 'relevant building' and includes medical and disabled care services.

Documented evacuation drills and debriefs every 6 months for the previous 18 months need to be provided as evidence.

For a complete list and full details of buildings that are 'relevant buildings' refer to section 75 of the Fire and Emergency New Zealand Act 2017.  Evacuation drills should be carried out 6 monthly and in accordance with the approved Emergency Evacuation Scheme.
